For Fox Sake Slow Down – Again

Wed, 19 May 2010

Please don't run Basil Brush over!!

It’s five years now since the Labour Government banned fox hunting. And if you drive through country roads at night you can’t fail to notice that there are more foxes around than ever. And more dead ones at the side of the road.

In town the problem seems even bigger. Foxes trotting along the footpaths even in relatively busy areas are a common site, a situation which isn’t helped by foolish townies feeding ‘Basil Brush’ without a thought for the damage foxes do.

And this touchy-feely attitude to foxes is evidenced by the signs you see above. The one on the left was snapped this week in rural Oxfordshire between Wheatley and Waterperry – according to the Beeb – by Jo Abbot, a member of the RAC Foundation. It implores drivers to slow down and save the fox. In a rural area?!

The second sign does pretty much the same but was snapped in Cornwall a couple of years ago. The sentiments are the same – slow down and save the fox. The trouble is these signs are being put up by townies in rural areas who give no thought to the devastation a fox can wreak on birds on farms. But what do they care? They’re taking care of Basil Brush.

And I think it’s a fair bet that Jeremy Clarkson didn’t put up the signs in Oxfordshire on his way home. He’s been quoted as saying he doesn’t avoid, he takes aim.

But then Jeremy understands the countryside.
