Hyundai Genesis Coupe (2012 – 2013): Engine details revealed

Hyundai Genesis Coupe (2012 - 2013) - new, more powerful engines

The UK and Europe don’t get the top end of Hyundai’s range – the Genesis and Genesis Coupe – but that could be set to change if the Genesis luxury brand from Hyundai becomes a reality.

So the news that the Hyundai Genesis Coupe is being updated is potentially now of more interest to UK and European car buyers, even if it’s only to see what currently sits at the top of the global Hyundai range. We already had a 2012 Genesis Coupe tease last week, but now we get engine details too.

The 2012 Genesis Coupe gets a new nose which seems to have taken all its inspiration from the new Hyundai Veloster Coupe. But what’s of most probably of most interest is what lurks under the bonnet.

The 2012 Genesis Coupe comes with a 3.8 litre Lamda V6 which gets an impressive 345bhp and 295lb/ft of torque, which gives Hyundai’s top-end coupe at least as much power as anything you could consider competition, such as the Nissan 370Z.

Also on offer for the more parsimonious is a 2.0 litre in-line four-pot which still manages to deliver 271bhp and 275lb/ft of torque.

Both the new engines in the Genesis Coupe get an eight-speed auto ‘box (no sign yet of Hyundai’s promised ten-speed ‘box yet) and a six-speed manual is still an option.

Even if the reports of Hyundia’s new luxury brand prove to be wrong (and they were revealed by Hyundai themselves) it seems highly likely Hyundai will bring the Genesis Coupe to Europe at some point as the market’s perception of Hyundai products continues upwards.

But our money’s still on the Genesis luxury brand dealing with high-end Hyundais.
