Peugeot 207 Economique – the 99g car

The Peugeot 207 Economique - guess what its CO2 is?!

As you may well have guessed, this is another car maker rolling out the usual low rolling resistance, lowered suspension, gear-change-light, steel wheels version of their regular runaround to create a car that magically dips below 100g/km CO2. Of course it’s completely disingenuous, because unless you drive like you’re carrying the last live eggs of the Dodo all the time you won’t get the CO2 levels quoted, and nor will you get the headline economy.

To be fair, if you do drive like my Mum, you will. But it’s becoming an obsession now – but where’s the science for the obsession? And Peugeot has gone even further with the Economique than we’ve seen from any other car maker. There are ’99g’ badges all over the place! I don’t care how much CO2 it emits – much less want to see badges all over the car proclaiming it – it’s all claptrap. I do care what it’s NOx is and what its PE is. Far more relevant. CO2 is harmless. NOx and particulate emissions aren’t. Rant over.

The new Peugeot 207 Economique starts at £12,995 for the standard version (pretty much in line with the Ford Fiesta ECOnetic) but you also get the option of an Economique+ which adds aircon, electric mirrors and a trip computer to the standard spec.

As you would expect, Peugeot has reams to say about the car. So if you want all the spec and explanations have a look at the Peugeot 207 Economique Press Release.
