1961 with man choke cross shaft

Rough idle, unbalanced carburetor throttle response, and poor gas mileage are common corvair engine problems that can result from a worn carburetor cross shaft. After decades of wear and corrosion to the cross shaft and its support brackets, the cross shaft will no longer rotate smoothly, making it difficult to achieve carburetor synchronization and smooth low RPM idle. Corvair owners often resort to a stronger accelerator tensioning spring, but this can cause additional friction, deflection of the cross shaft, as well as a stiffer gas pedal.

DragFree Cross Shafts have been improved:
  • Cover plates for the bearings. The bearings mounts now have a steel plate that covers and protects the bearings, reducing their exposure to engine grime. The plates are permanently attached to the mounting brackets.
  • Worn ends of the of the cross shaft rod are eliminated. The original shafts very commonly have grooves worn on the lower side of the rod where it rides on the carburetor mounting brackets. To assure that the bearings ride on a smooth surfaces, these worn sections are replaced with new steel rod.
  • AC knurling available. DragFree cross shafts are now available with knurling for vehicles with air conditioning.

DragFree Cross Shafts are outfitted with high chromium ball bearings installed on the carburetor mounting brackets. These are real bearings (not bushings) and allow the cross shaft to rotate freely and carburetor throttles to return smoothly to their closed positions. Ball bearings are far superior to brass bushings which can actually increase torsional friction. The hardened steel bearing mounts are custom fit to the cross shaft brackets.

DragFree Cross Shafts are beautifully restored from original stock units. The cross shafts are cleaned, stripped to bare metal, straightened as required, and recoated with heat-cured, temperature and scratch resistant paints with a pleasant, flat metallic finish. It is a beautiful and practical additional to your corvair engine.

knurling on cross shaftKnurling for air conditioning can be added to your DragFree Cross Shaft. Simply request that AC knurling be added in a message to VairFare when you order your DragFree Cross Shaft. (Note: A cross shaft to which knurling has been added can only be returned if there is a refurbishing defect.)

Audi to show rugged A4 allroad in Geneva

Tue, 17 Feb 2009

While Audi's A6 allroad quattro didn't resonate in North America and ultimately was discontinued after the 2005 model year, it did enjoy mild popularity in Europe and continues to be sold there. Now Audi plans to bolster the line with the addition of the A4 allroad quattro that's set to make its first public appearance at next month's Geneva motor show. Beginning with an A4 Avant, Audi improves its off-roading abilities by raising the ride height by 37 millimeters to 180 millimeters and widening the track in front and rear by 20 millimeters.
