Restoration Details

  • This charger sat on my shelf for about 15 years before finally making the leap to get it restored.  THE REASON I delayed was because of the COST and TIME involved in getting it done right  AND there was no guarantee that the coil was still good when I was done - IT WAS GOOD!  At the same time, I wanted to maintain the original finish and patina which are in excellent shape for such an old garage-type automotive tool.  
  • The charge cord is a new extra long (over 8 feet) replacement with red and white cloth leads soldered-in.  Cotton wrapped at splice and crimped with brass cord protection strap as would have been on original cord.  Cord is tipped with brass rod-type tips similar to the original as clips were not on original design (clips with round crimp holes are available that the rods would slip into if you wanted the extra functionality).
  • This charger had a non-stock socket jumpered-in with a substitute non-Edison base Tungar bulb.  These were removed and the entire works were uninstalled cleaned and reinstalled in the proper OEM configuration.  OEM porcelain socket was disassembled, cleaned, all conductor parts cleaned for good clean conductance contact and appearance as well.  New slotted mounting bolts used on OEM porcelain socket to replace missing bolts.
  • New NOS black cloth power cord with old stock bakelite plug.
  • New Cloth insulated Tungar bulb clip lead with original bulb clip.
  • Newish GE Tungar Bulb with Edison base and NOS hexagonal glass screw-in fuse.
  • Open Circuit Test at 17 VDC.  Charge test at 14 VDC 1 amp (this would vary according to battery condition)

NOTE:  Tungar bulbs are very resilient to shorted battery Cells.

The roster of cars at the Barrett-Jackson auction in Scottsdale, Ariz., next week has been cut by two. Barrett-Jackson has dropped a 1971 Plymouth Hemi 'Cuda recreation because the vehicle identification number on the car did not match the VIN on the title. A little legwork found that the car had been reported stolen in 1976.
